Charles Bongiorno, MD, FACP, FACG, Chief, Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology
Dr. Bongiorno, an associate professor of Medicine, is the chief of the Division of Gastroenterology. Dr. Bongiorno is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, cum laude, from Kent State University, Ohio, and his medical degree from the University of Toledo (Medical College of Toledo). He served his internship and residency at The Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Nutrition. Prior to joining the faculty of UMDNJ-SOM, Dr. Bongiorno was an attending physician, Gastroenterology at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and Yale University in Connecticut. more >>

John Chiesa, DO, FACOI, Vice Chair, Dept. of Medicine
Dr. Chiesa, an associate professor of Medicine within the Division of Gastroenterology, was a member of the UMDNJ-SOM faculty from 1980 until 2005. Dr. Chiesa, board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Columbia University and his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He served his internship at Kennedy Memorial Hospital (KMH), Stratford, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Veterans Hospital, Salem, VA and at KMH. He did his fellowship in Gastroenterology at The Graduate Hospital and KMH. Dr. Chiesa also serves as vice chair of the Department of Medicine. more >>

Promila Banerjee, MD
Dr. Banerjee earned her Doctorate of Medicine in 1997 from Saba University in the Netherlands-Antilles. She completed her internship at the University of Virginia in Roanoke-Salem, VA and her Internal Medicine Residency at Hahnemann University Hospital, Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. Her GI fellowship was at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and at the Graduate Hospital & MCP-Hahnemann University Hospitals in Philadelphia, PA. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and is licensed to practice medicine in New Jersey. She brings great endoscopic expertise and advanced technology that also will be available in our new Digestive Disease Institute, such as endoscopic ultrasound, advanced ERCP, and motility. more >>
