CARES Institute Announces Child Abuse and Neglect Lecture Series
STRATFORD — The Child Abuse Research Education and Service (CARES) Institute at the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine will bring two national experts to New Jersey this month to present free educational programs for professionals from all disciplines who work with abused or neglected children.
On June 13, the CARES Institute will present "The Nature of Nurture: Biology, Environment and the Drug Exposed Child" by Dr. Ira J. Chasnoff, president of the Children’s Research Triangle and a professor of pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. Dr. Chasnoff is one of the nation’s leading experts on the effects of maternal drug on newborn infants and children. His research includes a study of the long-term cognitive, behavioral and developmental effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol, cocaine and other drugs. On June 13, this lecture will be presented twice: from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., in Trayes Hall B, Rutgers University - Douglass College Center, 100 George St., in New Brunswick; and from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in the S-ABC Conference Room, on the Rutgers University Camden Campus Center.
On June 26, the CARES Institute will present "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Traumatic Grief" by Dr. Elissa J. Brown, an associate professor of psychology and the director of the Prevention of Adverse Reactions to Negative Events and Related Stress (PARTNERS) Program at St. John’s University in New York. Dr. Brown is also the director of a Category III site of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. On June 26, Dr. Brown will present this lecture twice: from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the New Jersey Law Center, One Constitution Square, in New Brunswick; and from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., in Room 3300, University Doctors Pavilion, 42 E. Laurel Road, in Stratford.

The Experts in Child Abuse and Neglect lecture series is a quarterly program for New Jersey medical and mental health professionals who work with abused or neglected children. The series brings leading experts from across the country to help educate New Jersey professionals about best practices, latest research, and innovative developments in identifying, treating and healing victims of child sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. The lectures are held in various locations in New Jersey to provide access to the series for as many medical and mental health professionals as possible.
UMDNJ is the nation's largest free-standing public health sciences university with more than 5,500 students attending the state's three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and its only school of public health, on five campuses. Last year, there were more than two million patient visits to UMDNJ facilities and faculty at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford.
