With student and STUCO input, we have designed a series of workshops to aid you in career development in preparation for the Match. Contact Academic Affairs for specific dates and times for the workshop presentations throughout the year.

1. Workshop #1  

Understanding Yourself

Faculty:  Marilyn Kimmelman, EdD

At the end of this session, students should be able to:

  1. Describe their own strengths and assets
  2. Apply concepts in the Myers Briggs Type Indicator to career choices
  3. Identify attitudes and behaviors that influence their lives
  4. Compare their own characteristics as identified on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator to those of physicians practicing in specialty areas.

Planning Your Educational Career

  • Learning Objectives: at the end of the session participants will:
  • Describe the key elements of a successful residency applicant
  • Outline the key items in a medical students curriculum vitae
  • List summer opportunities that will build their CV
  • Discuss the new SOM Mentors Program
  • Identify key aspects of writing the CV and the personal statement
  • Recall features of the Dean's Letter

Exploring Specialty Options

  1. Describe issues to consider in choosing a specialty
  2. List the highly competitive specialties
  3. Interpret COMLEX scores
  4. Discuss the impact of COMLEX scores on specialty choice
  5. Discuss the pros and cons of taking the USMLE exam
  6. Outline the match process

The Electronic Application System

  1. Describe ERAS   and how to Navigate the ERAS system

  1. Identifying specialties for which you are a reasonable candidate
  2. Meet Program Directors from various program and specialty areas
  3. What you should ask in the residency interview of Attendings, residents, staff

At the end of this session, students should be able to:

  1. Compare opportunities in the NRMP and AOA matches
  2. Assess residency programs for the best fit
  3. Create a back-up plan
  4. Execute a back-up plan
  5. Strategize how to Scramble
  6. Identify who has Matched here, generally, in the past
