Bariatric/MIS Fellowship Program

Program Overview

The Bariatric/MIS Fellowship Program at UMDNJ-SOM under the direction of Dr. Alex Gandsas will provide a structured educational and training experience necessary to achieve expertise in bariatric/minimally invasive surgery.  This one-year program is offered as a sub-specialty program of General Surgery   The Fellow will rotate through the three divisions of the Kennedy Health System and will be exposed to a variety of laparoscopic cases.  The Fellow shall receive graduate training in the basic medical sciences with particular emphasis on the pathology, physiology and anatomy related to bariatric/ minimally invasive surgery.

The breakdown of surgical procedures: 
Bariatrics - 60%
MIS - 40%

In addition, Fellows will be exposed to a large volume of basic endoscopy.

Clinical responsibilities include all aspects of care of the bariatric patient from initial clinic visit to post-operative visits.

Teaching responsibilities include demonstration of MIS techniques to all levels of residents and students.

Fellows are strongly encouraged to conduct clinical studies and present results at national meetings.  Funding will be provided.

The Bariatric/MIS Fellowship program at UMDNJ-SOM is a new program this year.  We have applied for membership and accreditation from the Fellowship Council and will participate in the Fellowship Council’s match.

Application and Qualifications

Applicants are required to :

  • Have completed all DO or MD requirements from an AOA/AMA accredited School of Medicine.
  • Have completed an approved AOA/AMA General Surgery Residency Program
  • Comply with the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners requirements.
  • Comply with University requirements as set forth in contract material.
  • Must possess a valid New Jersey license.

To be considered for a residency or fellowship program, please send the following to the Program Director's office as soon as possible:

  1. Completed application (typed or printed legibly in black ink)
  2. Completed a General Surgery Residency Program  in the United States
  3. Official medical school transcript
  4. Part I, II, and III Board scores
  5. Three (3) current letters of recommendation
  6. Copy of contract from internship year
  7. Copy of internship and/or residency certificates
  8. Copy of any state license (if applicable)
  9. Copy of the CDS and DEA certifications
