Family Medicine Residency Program
Program Director:
Christopher Zipp, DO
Residency Coordinator:
Amy Burnley
UMDNJ-SOM Department of Family Medicine is most pleased to announce that we have matched 10 positions for the 2009-2010 academic year. This is a great accomplishment at a time when the national trend and interest in Family Practice is decreasing and the average fill rate is 1.5 positions per Family Medicine program. UMDNJ-SOM is the only osteopathic Family Medicine program in the nation to succeed in recruiting such a high number of positions. This was noted and published nationally through the ACOFP.
The Residency Program seeks to broaden the scope of knowledge from the medical school curriculum to both inpatient and outpatient clinical practice of medicine. The program is structurally committed to educating physicians in all aspects of family medicine, whose training and experience qualifies him/her to practice in the fields of medicine and surgery and to accept the total continuing responsibility of the patient and/or the family as a whole.
The UMDNJ-SOM Family Medicine Residency program is uniquely osteopathic in our education. We go beyond teaching Osteopathic Manipulative techniques and teach true Osteopathic Philosophy and Practice. This goes beyond structural manipulation and is woven into all aspects of our residency education. We have created a culture of education and have a philosophy of cooperation among our students, residents, and faculty when it comes to osteopathic education. We go beyond meeting the requirements for training and tailor our residency to the trainees’ strengths and weaknesses and focus on their desired future scope of practice. We have 223 paid faculty here at UMDNJ-SOM including 21 full time paid faculty in the Department of Family Medicine. This does not include numerous volunteer faculty throughout the community.
This program went through the AOA inspection in April, 2009 and received a five-year approval. This is the highest approval year rating one can receive.
The number of residents for the 2009/2010 academic year is as follows:
10 - OGME1
7 - OGME-2
8 - OGME-3
25 - Total
