Continuing Medical Education
MRAP Course—Mini Residency in Appropriate Prescribing
Welcome
The course was started at the request of the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners in 1981. It is a remedial education course for doctors who have been sanctioned by their licensing agencies for inappropriate prescribing of controlled substances. It is also a primer for basic education in pain management and substance abuse for healthcare providers who prescribe DEA approved controlled substances.
Since 1981 this pioneer remedial education course has been available to healthcare providers who:
- want to upgrade their knowledge;
- have been sanctioned for injudicious prescribing, dispensing or record-keeping involving opioids, benzodiazepines and stimulants;
- lack the ability to recognize abuse, addiction and patterns of manipulative behavior.
This course is for all healthcare providers, including physicians, nurse practitioner, physician assistants, dentists, podiatrists and pharmacists.
Nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants may utilize this course as a basis for applying for DEA prescribing privileges in some states.
Now offered by the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM) through the Department of Family Medicine, Carman A. Ciervo, DO, FACOFP, chair, the course continues under the direction of William Vilensky, DO, RPh, FASAM, FAOAAM, FAAFS.
