Glossary of Terms

AAMC – Association of American Medical Colleges.

Allopathic programs – M.D. programs.

COMLEX – Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination.

CV – Curriculum Vitae. A resume highlighting your academic accomplishments, including degrees earned, publications, presentations, and professional organizations.

Dean’s Letter – A letter from UMDNJ that summarizes your accomplishments during medical school.

DME - Director of Medical Education. The individual in charge of a GME program.

ERAS – Electronic Residency Application Service.

GME - Graduate Medical Education.

Letter of Recommendation – A letter of support written by a physician familiar with you.

Match - The process for obtaining an internship.  There are separate matches for allopathic and osteopathic GME programs.

NBME – National Board of Medical Examiners.  Administers USMLE .

NBOME – National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.  Administers COMLEX.

NMRP – National Resident Matching Program for allopathic match.

NMS – National Matching Services for osteopathic match.

OPTI - Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institution.  All Osteopathic internship and residencies are part of a specific OPTI, which is a partnership between hospitals, osteopathic medical schools, and GME training programs.

Osteopathic programs – Programs that lead to specialty certification by the American Osteopathic Association.

Personal Statement – An essay that summarizes your background and your interest in a program.

Program Director - The individual in charge of a specific internship and/or residency program.

SF Match - The match process for several competitive allopathic specialties.

Scramble - The process of obtaining an internship and/or residency after the match has ended.  Only done by individuals who do not find an internship and/or residency through the official match process.

Token – A password necessary to use the ERAS system.

Transcript – The official university record of your progress towards your degree.

USMLE – United States Medical Licensing Examination.
