Surgery

Overview

The program is geared at providing a wide base of didactic and technical training to the surgical residents.  Through a series of conferences, assigned reading, testing and repetition, the residents will be able to perform a self-analysis in order to master the material outlined in the curriculum.

The program is designed to allow the resident to perform procedures in which they are qualified.  A first year will learn to open and close an incision and advance through the years to the point a chief resident will perform complex cases under supervision.

The program is intended to optimize learning in the 80-hour time constraint and create an environment based on camaraderie and team effort.

The faculty is committed to education.  All cases represent teaching opportunities.  The general surgery residents cover the full-time faculty of UMDNJ-SOM as well as attendings who serve on our volunteer faculty.  This allows for a variety in the scope and volume of cases as well as direct interaction with a diverse group of surgeons.

UMDNJ-SOM is conveniently located in Stratford, New Jersey just 20 minutes outside of downtown Philadelphia.  It is a two-hour drive to New York City to the North and Baltimore to the South.  This location offers easy access to the Jersey Shore as well as the Pocono Mountains.

What our Residents say about the program

“This is an excellent residency program.  It is well balanced.... the program has enough but not too much didactics and is very strong in operative experience. This is the best aspect of the program.  You come out of here able to operate.”
David Reel, D.O.
(PGY V)

“The program offers a variety of cases-- everything from
transplant to bread-and-butter general surgery. And you are in the OR from day one. There also is a
good working atmosphere between all of the residents
and the attendings.”
Tim Leone, D.O.
(PGY IV)
