Surgery

Marc RosenSo after surviving four long years of medical school, you decided you want to be a surgeon. Welcome to the next five hard working years of night call, countless consults, and never-ending pimp sessions.  The good news is, before you know it, the day will arrive when you are referred to by patients as their surgeon.

Thank you for visiting our web site to learn about the general surgery program at UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine.  The aim of the four-year program in general surgery is to provide the necessary training and education to the members of the osteopathic profession who wish to prepare themselves for the practice of general surgery.  The program will provide the basic requirements for eventual certification of general surgery.  The program may also be utilized to satisfy the one or two year general surgery experience required by the ENT or urologic specialties.    The resident will be given a broad exposure and will see a full spectrum of surgical problems during the residency.  The resident will be given the opportunity to serve as first assistant and eventually as a supervised operating surgeon.

Our full-time and volunteer faculty makes teaching a high priority are deeply committed to the education of surgical trainees.  Most have advanced or fellowship training that allows the residents to learn the most modern treatments.  The faculty acts as advisors to the residents in order to complete their research requirements, and we have access to a renowned researcher within the department who has an active laboratory, which allows opportunities in basic as well as clinical research.

When looking at our graduates, I am proud of their successes and know we are fulfilling our mission.  As a prospective resident, I invite you to come experience the program by planning a rotation with us.

What our Residents say about the program

“This is an excellent residency program.  It is well balanced.... the program has enough but not too much didactics and is very strong in operative experience. This is the best aspect of the program.  You come out of here able to operate.”
David Reel, D.O.
(PGY V)

“The program offers a variety of cases-- everything from
transplant to bread-and-butter general surgery. And you are in the OR from day one. There also is a
good working atmosphere between all of the residents
and the attendings.”
Tim Leone, D.O.
(PGY IV)
