Rotations

Internal Medicine

Doctor from over patient's shoulderThe core curriculum for the internship consists of four months of in-patient general internal medicine and one month of ICU.  There are six and one-half months of core curriculum for internal medicine for residency:  four months in the first year focus on inpatient care, and two and one-half months in the second year are for medicine subspecialty rotations with emphasis on those that are applicable to family practice training.  In addition, the development of procedural skills is strongly encouraged such as biopsies, proctoscopy and culture techniques.

The inpatient rotations provide an opportunity for the resident to develop leadership skills during the first year of the program.  Each resident is the team leader for a team, which includes interns as well as students.  Decision-making and problem-solving skills are developed and enhanced during this experience.

Medicine subspecialty rotations are designed to provide flexibility in training the resident and may be selected according to the resident’s particular areas of interest or training needs.  There is one required two-week rotation in dermatology.  The following subspecialties are available for the medical selective and general elective months:

  • Allergy/Immunology
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Dermatology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology
  • Infectious Disease
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology
  • Pulmonology
  • Rheumatology

Surgery

SurgeryThe core curriculum for the internship consists of one month of general surgery.  The surgery core component of the residency program is two and one-half months in duration; one month of orthopedics and sports medicine during the first year, and one and one-half months of subspecialty surgery in the second year, which are divided into two-week blocks for ophthalmology, otolaryngology and urology.  In addition, residents may select from any of the above subspecialties for general elective months.  Residents are encouraged to participate in any procedure that their patients in the longitudinal care setting require, if at all possible.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

ObGynThe core curriculum for the internship consists of four weeks of obstetrics working one-on-one with an attending physician.  The core curriculum of the residency program includes three months of obstetrics and gynecology in an ambulatory setting, two months during the first year and one month during the second year.  During this time, the practice of office gynecology and pre- and post-natal care are emphasized.  Procedures such as pap smears, cultures, endometrial biopsy, and colposcopy are taught in an ambulatory environment as well as encouraged in the longitudinal care component.  If additional training in obstetrics and gynecology in an ambulatory or inpatient environment are desired, they can be scheduled during the elective months.

Pediatrics

pediatricsThe core curriculum for Internship is four weeks of inpatient pediatrics and two weeks of newborn nursery. For residency, the core curriculum includes three months of pediatrics training in an ambulatory environment, one month in the first year and two months in the second, one month of which is in a pediatric emergency room.  In addition, there is formal didactic education provided during the Noon Conference Series as well as case-based learning during the morning report activities.  The curriculum provides training that addresses the continuum from the perinatal period through adolescence.

Emergency Medicine

EmergencyThe core curriculum for emergency medicine is of three months duration, one month each during internship, first and second years of residency.  In addition, residents on call for internal medicine will evaluate longitudinal care patients in the emergency room for admission.

Electives

ElectivesThere are four weeks provided in the internship for electives.  There are seven months available for elective rotations in the residency program:  two during the first year, which can be in any field of medicine, and five during the second year, two of which must be selected from the internal medicine subspecialties.  Electives may be selected to broaden the base of knowledge for a resident or to focus on a particular area of interest.
