Welcome
Welcome to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM). We are pleased that you have an interest in our school.
The Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) is a fully-trained and licensed physician who prescribes drugs, performs surgery, and selectively utilizes all accepted modalities to maintain and restore health.
Osteopathic physicians practice throughout the United States. They comprise nearly 25% of the nation's family doctors and provide care to 20 million Americans.
The osteopathic approach to medical practice started as a reform movement within organized medicine in the latter half of the 19th century. Since then, osteopathic medical schools have produced comprehensively-trained physicians who are taught to consider the patient from a biopsychosocial perspective rather than focusing just on the patient's disease or symptoms. Osteopathic medicine is particularly concerned with the promotion of health and the prevention of human illness, disease, and injury.
Osteopathic physician´s recognize that every patient is a complex human being whose body, mind, and life experiences are interrelated and have a direct bearing on health and illness.
