Faculty Development

Our former Faculty Development Office has merged with our Student Support Office to form The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The CTL offers individualized assistance to SOM faculty members, interns, residents or TA's seeking to improve areas of their instruction. Arrangement for any of the services listed below can be made by calling the Center at 856-566-6738. These services are private and confidential. If the participant requests, the Center will provide written acknowledgement that these services are being utilized to the department chair or instructional supervisor.

Services

Focus Groups or Evaluation Summary Reports - Upon request, the Director will review the student's responses to instruction and make suggestions regarding techniques for improvement. It is most helpful, in these situations, if complete sets of responses for 3-5 classes are submitted for review.

Development of course materials - We can help new course directors with course design, implementation and assessment of their curriculum. Guidance in instructional/pedagogical methods and learning styles could also be provided.

Review of Syllabi and Course Assessment Instruments (Tests, Quizzes, Assignments) - Instructional personnel can also submit course materials to the Center which will provide a written critique of those materials based upon current thinking regarding testing and measurement, syllabus development, and course design. Upon request, the Center will also seek comments from outside reviewers from related disciplines at other institutions.

Classroom Visitations or Videotaping - The Center will observe and/or videotape class sessions for SOM faculty members. Any videotapes remain the property of the instructor and will be reviewed by the Center Director, if requested. Upon request, reports of classroom visitations and/or videotape reviews of teaching will be forwarded to the department chair or instructional supervisor.

Instructional Development focuses on the student, the course, or the curriculum, which can include:

  1. Course design
  2. Curriculum design
  3. Course and curriculum implementation
  4. Evaluation of above

Expected Major Outcomes:

  • Improved academic effectiveness and efficiency
  • Maximized resource utilization
  • Improved learning
  • Increased faculty and student satisfaction with courses and programs

Americans with Disabilities Act

The Center staff work together to assist faculty in the provision of student accommodations and services to ensure equal access to educational programs and services in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and UMDNJ policy. Accommodations are determined on an individual basis using disability documentation and in consultation with the faculty and students.
